The Immersive-Aesthetic as Spaces of Experience, is the title of a seminar event organized by the final year students of Visual Art Practice in IADT. The objective of the event is to create a number of individual situations of interaction throughout the day which will allow us to expose and examine contemporary theories regarding, contextuality, aesthetics and the role of the art audience.
The objectives of the Seminar will manifest themselves through the participation and engagement of the audience with the eclectic range of art based performances, talks and events specifically devised to evoke discussion surrounding many key concerns in contemporary art practice.
Rather than consign theory and practice to their traditional polar opposites, this seminar event shall create a dynamic informal ambience, through which the two elements can merge to create a critically engaged and thought provoking environment.

Ideas for introduction/key critical issues which we are addressing

We are looking at new media in art and how it can be used to create live and immesive experiences.

We are interested in how sound can be used to affect an overall space and change the experience of that space.

We are interested in how sounds can answer each other and how a response can come from hearing a sound.

Meeting 26th february

The group have decided to gather a bank of sounds to give to the guests (dennis McNulty and Peter Forde). We have roughly decided to either talk abstract sounds, or sound images(a sound which is recognisable as decribing someting). We are looking to get about ten sounds each. We need to have these by next monday ( 3rd march)and they should not be compressed(so in wav format preferably, but just definatly not mp3) Also its easiest id we have them on USB.

We are hoping to have Peter Forde set up outside the trevor scott hall

If possible we are looking at cordoning off the back of the trevor scott hall for Dennis Mc Nulty.

We spoke to dennis mcnulty about his requirements re sound systems, preferably he wants a PA system so we are looking into that, though we may need some extra funding for this, he definatly needs a decent amount of bass.

So basically are requirements for space/equipment
-PA system
-Trevor Scott Hall(the back is possible)
-Outside Trevor Scott Hall(a corridor area for Peter Fordes piece
-We need to find out peter fordes specific equipment requirements

2.20 Overall seminar Introduction…(group to decide how this should happen and who will do it…)

2.30-3.30 Group 1 Pictionary event (TS Hall)…group 1 short introduction and Sascha perfect to moderate game?

3.30 15 mins break, refreshments

3.45- 4.45 Group 4 short intro then Second Life event and discussion (TS Hall)..all online or with RL speakers also?

4.45 – ½ hr Break with refreshments during which Group 3 will present the ‘Binocular Football’ event (Quadrangle) (Adrian suggested organising a iadt/ncad/dit student match ?? as way of both inviting students from other colleges to attend the seminar day and also participate?...)

5.15 Group 2 Introduction to sound spaces

5.30-6.30 Sound Conversation event and discussion (Chapel?)

6.45 10 min Presentations by Sascha Perfect and others? On Game and aesthetic experiences...to open Group 1’s exhibition of pictionary outcomes at

7.15 Exhibition open in 4d room…followed by overall round-up discussions

- The first point of our critical framework is concerned with thr first speaker who we have confirmed, Peter Forde. In relation to Peter Forde, we are looking at the physicality of sound, the sensory element of sound and how the overall space can be affected by using sound. He has chosen to use 'Pure Data' a new programme to catalogue the sounds which the group will be working on.

- Our second probable speaker is Dennis McNutly. With Dennis McNulty's work we are concerned with an interactive experience, a conversation with sound and how sounds can answer each other. For this we will be recording sounds ( perhaps concerned with an overall theme of interior sounds vs exterior sounds or sound images vs non sound images) and having Dennis McNutly respond to these sounds with his own sounds.

- We are concerned in general with the non phsical in art, the interactive element of sound and the other issues raised concerning the two speakers we have selected. We are interested in the use of new technology in art especially in terms of the programmes Peter Forde uses. We are interested in creating live spaces of experience.

Meabh,

This does sound good. Something that I might suggest for playing with space is that you record sounds using two microphones on either size of something similar to a head. Apparantly this records sound as to how it bounces off your head and when played in stereo. You could go into 5.1 surround but this may do the trick, particularly with less reliance on hardware capabilities.
I will do some work in pure data and let you know how things look. But I will not have enough time for about a week.

The Idea for our group is exterior vs interior space and playing with thtese notions.(outdoor and indoor spaces in the college)
